How to Turn a Product Photo into a Transparent PNG

Ecommerce listings often need the product alone on a brand color, seasonal backdrop, or marketplace template. A transparent PNG lets one photo work in many layouts. This guide covers prep for product stills — lighting, shadows, white seamless vs busy tables — then one short online cutout step.

Why product cutouts use PNG

Site builders and listing templates composite your image onto their layouts. If your file includes a white studio sweep baked into the pixels, you cannot recolor the backdrop without cloning. White seamless vs busy backgrounds

• White / light seamless: usually easiest for automatic removal. Watch for white products on white paper — increase contrast with soft side light or a slight gray card behind.
• Busy tables / lifestyles: harder edges; expect more cleanup. Crop tighter before upload so the tool focuses on the hero object.
• Reflections and glass: may need a second pass in an editor after the automatic cutout.

Shadow decision

Soft contact shadows can look natural on light sites; some templates want a hard cutout only. Generate the cutout first, then add or remove shadow in the layout tool if needed. Do not assume one shadow policy fits every channel.
