How to Make a Transparent PNG (and Why JPG Cannot Be Transparent)

A transparent PNG is a PNG whose empty regions are actually empty (alpha), so any backdrop can show through. True alpha vs “looks transparent”

• True alpha: soft or hard edges that reveal the layer underneath in editors and browsers that support PNG alpha.
• Fake transparency: white/black matte baked into pixels, a checkerboard screenshot, or a JPG. It looks “clean” on white websites and broken everywhere else.

Always download PNG, then test on a non-white background.

Can JPG be transparent?

No. JPEG has no alpha channel. Re-saving a cutout as JPG (or exporting through a tool that flattens to JPG) destroys transparency and usually fills the empty area with white or black.

Export checklist (verify alpha)

1. Download PNG from the tool (not JPG).
2. Open it in an editor that supports alpha.
3. Drop it on #000 and on a brand color.
4. If a hard rectangle remains, the file is opaque — re-export without flattening.

Export traps that flatten alpha

• Re-saving as JPG / JPEG in any app
• Flattening layers in slides, Canva, or a site builder before download
• Screenshotting a checkerboard preview and using that as the “PNG”
• Email / chat compression that re-encodes to JPG

Why PNG can be large

Transparency and resolution both increase size. Confirm alpha first, then resize for the placement (store tile vs hero). Do not shrink before you know the cutout is real.
